Strengthening community begins with the first step.
For us it starts on the Front Step.

#TheFrontStepsProject, a “coffee moment” idea between Kristen Collins and Boston photographer Cara Soulia

kicked off in Needham, MA on March 18, 2020.

Our goal: To highlight the faces of our community during a time when we might not see them

in passing at the grocery store, coffee shop, on the train or at the gym.

Within 24 hours, over 100 Needham residents asked to participate.

Within 48 hours, the number tripled, and kept climbing.

Our team ultimately took images of over 850 members of the Needham community,

raising more than $50,000 for our Needham Community Council.

Hundreds of photographers from around the world voluntarily replicated #TheFrontStepsProject,

collectively raising over $3,350,000 for local organizations and non-profits

including food pantries, hospitals, animal shelters and more.

#TheFrontStepsProject bring us together virtually despite being - and maybe feeling - isolated.

We may be temporarily separated, but we are always united.

With so many feeling isolated or disconnected from friends, family and the rest of the world these days, something as simple as a happy photograph can help keep us going.

What They’re Saying

The Front Steps Project set the tone for my quarantine. My neighborhood raised over $1,000 for the Houston Food Bank in one short afternoon. It raised moral immediately and our community has been more in touch than ever because of it.

Thank you for this project! I truly love seeing the beauty in so many families. As tough as it all is, it really does bring us back to what is really important. Our family! And the simple things that truly fuel our soul.

Highlights of Needham

We are so lucky to have a first-class hospital right here in #Needham. We asked: What should the community know about @BIDNeedham *right now*?Their reply: We are in it together. We are prepared. We are here for you around the clock. ❤

We hustled over to the station during a busy day of #TheFrontStepsProject visits. We found one officer on-site. Everyone else was on patrol, keeping our residents safe. We're not surprised. ❤

Here’s the new Friday Night Social Hour in #Needham. We may be physically distancing, but we’re socially connected. Even if it means sitting in lawn chairs that were measured to be precisely six feet apart. ❤

The Front Steps Project, also known as #TheFrontStepsProject, was created on March 18, 2020 as a fundraiser for the Needham Community Council in Needham, Massachusetts. Participation was voluntary and limited to the residents of Needham, MA. The organizers wanted to find a way to unite and give back to their community during these uncertain times. The organizers were surprised and thrilled the idea spread and that individuals and groups from hundreds of other towns in the U.S., Canada and throughout the world replicated #TheFrontStepsProject in their own communities.

The organizers of the Needham-based The Front Steps Project have no involvement in any other TFSP projects or replications.  The organizers have no responsibility for, control over and disclaim any liability arising out of, the acts or omissions of other individuals, communities or groups that imitate or emulate the Needham-based The Front Step Project.
